The Orange Shirt Story is the true story of Phyllis Webstad, who was only six years old in 1973 when she was taken from her home to attend St. Joseph Mission Residential School in B.C. When she arrived at school, Webstad was stripped of all of her possessions, including a brand new orange shirt — never to be seen again.

The fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation saw plenty of community members gathering across Barrie on Monday, reflecting on the impacts of residential schools and honouring survivors.

Orange Shirt Day creator Phyllis Webstad is calling on Canadians to honour both Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — two similar, but distinct days.
